- Download and install VLC player VLC
- Open VLC player and open the file you want to transcode
- Press the stop button on playback
- On VLC go to File>Wizand
- Choose Transcode/Save to file
- Click Next
- Choose 'Existing playlist item'
- Highlight the file you loaded
- Click Next
- On Transcode Video choose WMV 3
- On Transcode Audio choose MP3
- Click Next
- On encaspulation format choose ASF
- Click Next
- On the 'select the file to save to' box put in a file name and make sure to add the extenstion .wmv to the file name
- Click Finish
- The final product, the transcoded file, will be in the VLC directory (default is c:\Program Files\VideoLan\VLC).

Thanks for breaking that down - I was slowly working my way through the many options trying to get a .wmv file that worked - you handed me the answer before I reached the "hell with it" point.

Doesn't work on Mac OS X.
WMV 3 isn't available (so I used WMV 2). The small output file contains only the audio, not the video. However, if I choose not to transcode the audio, then the video appears in the much larger output file (but without the audio, obviously).
I've tried a bunch of combinations, with one of two results. Either it doesn't work at all, or you get only audio or only video.
